Curriculum & Assessment

Our Curriculum at Edith Moorhouse Primary School is constantly evolving in order to meet the ever-changing needs of our pupils, whilst developing their knowledge and skills to become successful learners who are prepared for modern life and able to achieve success in the future.

We drive our curriculum forward through Oracy, Enrichment and Diversity. Personal Development is central to the whole curriculum.

Our long term framework ensures curriculum coverage, across the school, over a 2-year cycle (found below) using a topic based approach with personal development woven throughout. This was developed inline with The Early Years Foundation Stage Statutory Framework and The National Curriculum for pupils in Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2.

The documents below, lay out the Intent, Implementation and Impact of our curriculum with additional pages dedicated to each subject, showing the curriculum in action.

If you require more information, please speak to the curriculum lead - Mrs Sinclair or a member of teaching staff within the school.

Assessment Information

Reception - Baseline assessment

Please read the linked leaflet which explains what the reception baseline assessment (RBA) is.

It includes information about:

  • why schools are doing the assessment
  • what happens during the assessment
  • access arrangements
  • how the data is used

KS1 - Phonics Screening Information

Children in Year 1 will take part in the phonics screening check in June.
The purpose of the phonics screening check is to confirm that all children have
learned phonic decoding to an age appropriate standard.  Please see the linked leaflet for more information.

Each Year, the KS1 Team will hold a face-to-face meeting with parents to share information in detail about the phonics screening checks.  Please click on the padlet link below for all the information discussed for the phonics screening in 2024.  Also included are any questions asked during our parent & carer meeting along with the answers given.

KS1 - Optional SATs

Year 2 children within the River Learning Trust (RLT) complete the Maths Optional SATs in May.  Please see the linked leaflet for more information.

Year 4 - Multiplication Tables Check (MTC)

Children in Year 4 will take part in the MTC in June.  The purpose of the check is to determine whether your child can fluently recall their times tables up to 12, which is essential for future success in mathematics. It will also help your child’s school to identify if your child may need additional support.  Read more about this on the linked leaflet.

Year 6

If you have a child in year 6, at the end of key stage 2 (KS2) they will take
national curriculum assessments in:
• English grammar, punctuation and spelling
• English reading
• mathematics
Some people refer to these tests as SATs.  Please see the linked leaflets for more information.

Pupils working below the level of the national curriculum

Pupils working below the standards of the national curriculum in one or more subjects may be assessed under an alternative teacher assessment – either the:

  • pre-key stage standards, if they are engaged in subject-specific study
  • engagement model, if they are not engaged in subject-specific study

School will inform you if this is the case.
