Library Project

At Edith Moorhouse Primary School, our dream is to build a new school library that will provide access space and expertise to support children in their reading journey.

An effective school library has been proven to have a positive, long-term impact for children. Libraries also provide safe spaces and contribute to positive wellbeing for all.

Studies show that reading for pleasure makes a big difference to children’s educational performance. Evidence also suggests that children who read every day have greater general knowledge, a wider vocabulary and have an increased sense of satisfaction.

Reading is the gateway to learning anything about everything.

Our current library offer is through department library spaces across the school. We are looking into the prospects of a classroom pod to be built on the school grounds to provide a new and exciting library space that all our children will have access to.

In order to turn this dream into a reality, we have put together a project team of staff from school and volunteers from RAF Brize Norton. Funding for our library will come from fundraising initiatives and grant funding.

A New Chapter: Library Update

It has been an incredible few months since our school library officially opened its doors in September 2025. The space has quickly become a vibrant hub for imagination and discovery, and we are thrilled to see how much our students are enjoying the new collection.

By the Numbers: A Reading Milestone

We are delighted to announce that since our grand opening, a staggering 505 books have been borrowed and enjoyed by children across the school!

From captivating picture books to gripping novels, it is wonderful to see our pupils developing such a passionate "reading for pleasure" culture.

Access and Timetabling

To ensure every child has the opportunity to explore our shelves, we have a timetable in place. This allows whole classes to visit the library for dedicated browsing and quiet reading time during periods when the hall is not in use. This structured access ensures that every student, from Pre-school to Year 6, can regularly refresh their reading pile.

Meet Our Junior Librarians

The library wouldn't run half as smoothly without the dedication of our newly nominated Junior Librarians. Following a series of impressive applications, a team of students from Year 5 and Year 6 have taken on this important leadership role. Opportunities for new librarians to take over, will take place three times a year.

Our Junior Librarians are responsible for:

  • Opening the library during lunchtimes for drop-in reading sessions.

  • Managing the returns desk to ensure books are scanned back in correctly.

  • Organising the shelves to keep our collection looking its best.

Their hard work and commitment to our reading community have been exemplary, and they are doing a fantastic job of supporting their younger peers.

"A library is not a luxury but one of the necessities of life." — Henry Ward Beecher

Thank you to all the parents and staff who have supported our new library venture. We look forward to reaching our next milestone of 1,000 books borrowed!
